Handfasting

Handfasting by Dream Believer

Tying the Knot with Ancient Tradition and Modern Meaning

Handfasting is a beautiful, centuries-old Celtic tradition where a couple’s hands are bound together with ribbons or cords to symbolize their union—which is exactly where the phrase "tying the knot" comes from!

At Dream Believer, we love incorporating this deeply meaningful ritual into our ceremonies. Whether you are looking for a standalone spiritual commitment, a pagan-inspired celebration, or simply want to weave a beautiful, visual representation of your love into a modern civil wedding, we can craft a handfasting ceremony that feels authentic, magical, and perfectly you.

Our Handfasting Services

Integrated Wedding Rituals

You don’t have to choose between a modern legal wedding and an ancient tradition. We can seamlessly weave a handfasting ritual into your standard civil wedding ceremony, usually right after your vows or ring exchange, giving you a beautiful, legally binding, and deeply symbolic celebration.

Standalone Commitment Ceremonies

If you do not wish to be legally married but want to declare your eternal commitment to your partner, a standalone handfasting is the perfect alternative. This is a profound, spiritual way to bind your lives together without the need for government paperwork.

Vow Renewals: Re-Tying the Knot

Are you celebrating a major anniversary or a new chapter in your relationship? A handfasting ceremony is a wonderful way to renew your vows, allowing you to literally "re-tie the knot" and strengthen the bonds you’ve built over the years.

Blended Family Bindings

Handfasting isn’t just for couples! If you are blending two families together, we can design a beautiful ritual where children or stepchildren come forward to drape their own ribbons over your hands, symbolizing the creation of your new, unified family.

The Dream Believer Experience: How It Works

The First Hello

We’ll start with a relaxed chat over coffee or a video call. We’ll talk about what drew you to handfasting, what the ritual means to you, and how we can beautifully incorporate it into your overall vision for the day.

The Tying of the Knot

On the day, we will guide you through the choreography of the handfasting. Depending on your preference, we can drape and tie the cords as your celebrant, or we can invite your parents, best friends, or children up to place the ribbons, making for a truly inclusive and unforgettable moment.

Choosing Your Cords & Colors

This is the fun part! You get to choose the materials for your binding. Couples often use colored ribbons (where each color represents a different value, like passion, peace, or health), tartans that honor their heritage, macramé cords, or even pieces of fabric from a loved one’s clothing. We’ll guide you on how to select and prepare them.

Crafting the Script & Vows

We will write a bespoke script that explains the significance of the handfasting to your guests. You can choose traditional Celtic blessings, modern poetry, or write your own promises to say as each cord is draped over your hands.

Frequently Asked Questions

On its own, a handfasting ritual is not legally binding. However, as an authorized marriage celebrant, I can easily perform the handfasting alongside the required legal wording and paperwork, giving you a fully legal, recognized marriage.

It’s entirely up to you! As your celebrant, I can place the cords and tie the final knot, or we can invite your chosen family members and friends to come up one by one to place a ribbon over your hands.

Not at all! After the final knot is tied and your union is declared, you will gently slip your hands out of the binding. The knot remains intact, leaving you with a beautiful keepsake to display in your home forever.

No. While it has roots in ancient Celtic and Pagan traditions, handfasting is universally understood as a symbol of unity and binding love. Couples from all backgrounds and beliefs choose handfasting simply because it is a visually stunning and meaningful ritual.
